Nǐ kàn zhè zhāng dìqiú de zhàopiàn, lán de bùfen shì shénme?

Look at this photo of the Earth. What are the blue parts?

Shì hǎiyáng ba? Lán de bǐ biéde yánsè duōduō le.

The oceans, right? There's much more blue than any other color.

Duì, dìqiú shang dà bùfen shì hǎiyáng, zhǐyǒu yì xiǎo bùfen shì rén hé dòngwù zhù de dìfang.

Right. Most of the Earth is ocean; only a small part is where people and animals live.

Liu Ming

Shuǐ zhème duō, wèishénme hěn duō dìfang hái quē shuǐ?

With so much water, why are many places still short of water?

Teacher Wang

Yīnwèi hǎishuǐ bù néng zhíjiē hē, rén yòng de shuǐ dà bùfen láizì jiānghé.

Because sea water can't be drunk directly. Most of the water people use comes from rivers.

Liu Ming

But doesn't river water end up flowing into the sea too?

Teacher Wang

Duì, liújìn dàhǎi jiù bù néng hē le, suǒyǐ néng hē de shuǐ qíshí hěn shǎo, wǒmen yòng shuǐ de shíhou gèng yào zhùyì.

Right, and once it flows into the sea it can't be drunk. So there is actually very little water we can drink, and we should be all the more careful how we use it.

Those flowers by the river are lovely. Did someone plant them?

    6. 刘
