Why it matters · After listening to Liu Ming's chest, the doctor uses the pattern to calm him down.

    See dialogue 1
Full explanationThe reasoning behind the pattern · 1 paragraph

Here 好hǎo means worth or reason to, and 什么shénme means anything. 没什么好担心的méi shénme hǎo dānxīn de means there is nothing worth worrying about, so don't worry. The slot after 好hǎo is a verb, most often a feeling or reaction: 担心dānxīn, 怕pà, 着急zháojí, 哭kū, or 说shuō for nothing more to say. 有什么好怕的?yǒu shénme hǎo pà de? is a question that expects no answer: what is there to be afraid of? It says the same thing more strongly. 没méi can also be 没有méiyǒu. The pattern is spoken; it calms someone down, or plays something down, and with the wrong tone it can sound dismissive. With 看kàn, 吃chī or 玩wán it overlaps with 好看hǎokàn, 好吃hǎochī and 好玩hǎowán: 没什么好看的méi shénme hǎokàn de means there's nothing worth seeing. Do not drop 什么shénme or the final 的de: say 没什么好担心的méi shénme hǎo dānxīn de, not 没好担心méi hǎo dānxīn.
